Legal guide
This portal keeps your homeschool records in this browser. No account, no server, nothing uploaded. If you are just starting, here is the order that matters.
This is not legal advice. Homeschool laws can change. Verify current requirements with the California Department of Education and/or an attorney.
The order that matters
- Decide whether you are filing a Private School Affidavit (PSA). If you are operating a full-time private school for your own children, you file the PSA annually with the CDE.
- Know the filing window. Per EC Section 33190 and CDE guidance, the PSA must be filed with the CDE by October 15 of each year. The filing system is available August 1 through June 30.
- Know the branches of study you must offer. For grades 1–6, EC 51210 requires English, Mathematics, Social Sciences, Science, Visual and Performing Arts, Health, and Physical Education. For grades 7–12, EC 51220 adds Foreign Language, Applied Arts, Career Technical Education, and Automobile Driver Education.
- Keep attendance records. The PSA requires a record of student attendance to be kept at the school (EC Section 48222).
- Keep a course of study. Document what you teach and when.
- Keep samples and records. A portfolio or record log is not legally mandated in the same way as attendance, but it is strongly recommended and is how you demonstrate what was done.
